The Hollywood sign has been saved from urban sprawl. A conservation group has raised the $12.5 million needed to purchase 138 acres adjacent to the sign. A $900,000 donation from Playboy founder Hugh Hefner put them over the top. The privately owned land had been touted as a potential site for luxury homes or a posh new hotel.
